BMI stands for Body Mass Index, a calculation that uses height and weight as an estimation of whether you are underweight, normal, overweight or obese. Your BMI can give you a relative measure of your risk for some of the health concerns associated with being overweight or obese.
However, while BMI can be a good indicator of body fat, it should only be used as an estimate in assessing the impact of your weight status. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), factors such as age, race and gender may affect its accuracy.
It’s important to keep in mind that BMI is only one factor related to health concerns associated with being overweight and obesity. The National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute (NHLBI) advises that waist circumference, blood pressure and your level of physical activity are also important in determining your overall health status.

Did you know that water is the single largest component of the human body – making up about 60 percent of a person’s weight, on average?
That said, it’s no surprise that water is essential for life. And we’re not just talking about plain tap water. Most foods and beverages contain water, and all beverages, including those with caffeine, hydrate. Being totally, wonderfully hydrated is a combination of getting plenty of fluids from a variety of sources (water and water beverages, sparkling beverages, coffee, tea, juice and energy drinks) and eating a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables, that are high in water content. It’s important to meet your nutrition and hydration needs while remaining within your daily calorie limits, keeping in mind that all calories count no matter the food or beverage they come from.

Calories are your body’s source of energy for all of its activities, and your energy needs will change depending on your age, weight and activity level. Keep in mind that your body’s ability to use calories (your metabolism) slows as you age, and your activity level is likely to decline over time. When the calories you consume consistently exceed the calories you expend, you may be on the road to “tipping the scale” and becoming overweight or obese.
