Give It Back® Challenge

CMS Middle Schools 'Give It Back'
Fall 2009

November 20th marked the end of Coca-Cola’s Give It Back® Challenge between twelve middle schools across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg district, but only one could be victorious. The grand prize of $1,000 was rewarded to JM Alexander Middle School on December 2nd after collecting 201 bags of recyclables, the most aluminum cans and plastic bottles per student compared to the other schools. For the Fall Challenge, there was a grand prize and also a chance for the schools to win second place for $500 or third place for $250. Northridge Middle was awarded second place while Sedgefield Middle came in third. A great effort was put forth by all the students participating from the twelve middle schools.Red Moon Marketing teamed up with Coca-Cola by becoming recycling ambassadors to help promote recycling within the CMS school system. The recycling ambassadors led the Give It Back® Challenge among 6th graders at each of the twelve middle schools chosen. During the nine week challenge, students learned different elements about recycling including how to recycle and how the students could play a part in helping their community. They learned about Giving Back with educational notebooks and videos - "The Importance of Recycling," "How to Recycle Properly," and "How You Can Help the Community by Recycling". Watch all three to learn the importance of proper recycling in Mecklenburg County and how to help the community through recycling.Together, Northridge, Sedgefield, Martin Luther King Jr., Piedmont, Northeast, Ranson, Southwest, South Charlotte, James Martin, Coulwood and Bishop Spaugh combined with JM Alexander to collect 1,270 bags for a total of 6,352 pounds of recyclables, which is over three tons of recyclables! The recycling ambassadors from Red Moon found the program to be rewarding not only for themselves but also for the CMS students who really grasped just how important recycling is for their communities.Click to view The Importance of Recycling
