SOGO Active

SOGO Active | Coca-Cola

Sogo Active is a program created for one reason: to help youth challenge themselves and their friends to get moving. Sogo Active was developed by ParticipACTION, Coca-Cola Canada, and an advisory committee of youth and organizations representing Canadian diversity. The goal was to create a youth-focused Physical Activity movement, to help young Canadians 13-19 to become more active. Sogo Active is a $5 million, five-year initiative. The program is delivered by a network of 13 Provincial/Territorial Coordinators and close to 1500 local Community Host organizations, and is available to youth across every province and territory in Canada. This innovative nationwide movement is aimed at getting Canadian teenagers moving by supporting and encouraging them to find fun reasons and new opportunities to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. It is a tool to help youth challenge themselves and others to get active. It is a network to connect youth and give them ideas and support to keep motivated. Once youth have registered at sogoactive.com, they can begin! How does it work? 1) Take the Challenge Youth can join on-going challenges, one-time events happening in their area, accept a cross-Canada Challenge or create their own challenge. 2) Challenge Friends They can encourage friends to get involved just by clicking the "tell a friend about this challenge" button on the site. They can get support from a local Community Host organization in their area. A Community Host organization can provide access to facilities, equipment, advice, and even funding if needed. 3) Keep Moving Once youth have accepted a challenge - Sogo will help them keep to their challenge through emails and messages of encouragement. Participants will be able to track how active they are each day and compare their levels of activity with the rest of Canada. In July 2010, sogoactive.com re-launched with a new look and feel that was based on feedback we had received from Canadian teens. Sogo wants Canadian teens to help solve the inactivity crisis. The facts are scary: Teens are bigger, weaker and less fit than ever. Only 12% of kids are active enough. 1 in 4 kids under 17 are over-weight. And for the first time in history, this generation may die before their parents. In August 2010 Sogo launched a campaign to search for 12 Sogo Ambassadors who can inspire and challenge their friends to get moving! Sogo Active and www.sogoactive.com were developed through the partnership between Coca-Cola Canada and ParticipACTION and the desire to address the inactivity crisis with Canadian teens head on.
