Back pain is one of the most common types of pain. It can be acute or chronic. There are many different types of back pain. They range from a dull ache to chronic pain that prevents you from sitting for long periods of time.

1. Poor posture
Poor posture may be the result of repeated movements of the body in a position that leads to muscle strain. It can be caused by anything from sitting too long, to slouching on the couch, or even sleeping in an awkward position.
In general, poor posture may lead to back pain or discomfort in other parts of the body. It may also cause neck pain and headaches due to tight muscles and nerves out of alignment.
The following are some examples of what poor posture may look like:
- slouching when you sit
- sitting with your head tilted too far forward
- sitting with your feet turned out at an angle instead of straight ahead.

2. Lack of exercise
Lack of exercise is a common occurrence. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that more than one-third of the world’s population has inadequate physical activity.
According to an article in The New York Times: “The simplest way to strengthen your spine is to move regularly throughout the day, in whatever capacity works for you. This might mean increasing your daily steps, taking short walks during the workday or prioritising a slightly longer walk in the morning or evening.”
3. Muscle strain
Muscle strain, or pulled muscle, may affect the body’s muscles and their connective tissues. This may cause them to be stretched.
There are two main types of muscle strain: overuse and acute. Overuse may happen when you do the same action repeatedly without allowing your muscles time to rest and recover.
Acute injuries may happen suddenly as a result of an accident or injury that forces your muscles beyond their natural range of movement or use.
4. Herniated disc
A herniated disc can occur anywhere in your spine, from your neck to your lower back. Slipped discs are most commonly found in the lower back. Your spine is a complex network of nerves and blood vessels.
Slipped disc symptoms may include:
- pain and numbness, usually on only one side of the body
- pain that spreads to your arms or legs
- pain that worsens at night or when performing certain movements
- pain that becomes worse after standing or sitting
- pain with short-distance walking
- unexplained muscle weakness
- sensations of tingling, aching, or burning in the affected area.
These are just some examples of the symptoms associated with a slipped disc. A slipped disc can put additional strain on the nerves and muscles surrounding it.
