Don't wash every plate by hand in the sink because of a dishwasher malfunction. Why doesn't my GE dishwasher clean dishes properly? You may need to clean the inside, sprinklers and filter. Use these GE dishwasher troubleshooting tips to find the perfect solution for washing your dishes.

You can fix the GE dishwasher yourself or have it repaired at a service center.

While component failures are always possible, most GE dishwasher problems can be fixed easily. Here are a few options you can use if your GE dishwasher doesn’t clean dishes, from optimal loading techniques to detergent use.

Dirty dishes are not loaded properly

One of the most common reasons a GE dishwasher doesn't clean dishes thoroughly is improper loading. Water and detergent cannot reach every item if the racks are overfilled or not used properly.

Use these dishwasher loading tips to improve efficiency:

  • Don't overload: To allow for proper circulation of air, water, and detergent, make sure there is enough room between each item.
  • Correctly place bulkier goods on the bottom rack: Load tall things like platters and trays around the perimeter to avoid obstructing the spray arms.
  • Organize the glasses in the top rack properly: To prevent glassware from moving while cleaning and hanging below the rack, wedge it between the tines.
  • Examine the spray arms: Rotate the spray arms manually before beginning a wash cycle to make sure they may move around without any restrictions.

The dishwasher requires cleaning

The warm, humid atmosphere of a dishwasher can quickly accumulate food particles, mould and mildew if not cleaned frequently. These residues can clog spray arms or filters, resulting in dirty dishes. Most dishwasher cleaning instructions recommend cleaning monthly to get rid of food residue and prevent mould and mildew.

The GE dishwasher's filter, spray arms, and tub may be cleaned as follows:

Filter:

  • Rotate the filter counterclockwise to remove it.
  • Use a soft sponge to gently clean the primary and mesh filters as you rinse them under running water.
  • After replacing the mesh filter, tighten the main filter by rotating it clockwise.

Upper and lower spray arms should be removed:

  • Both should be rinsed with water. To remove mould or mildew, clean the area using a non-abrasive sponge.
  • Unclog spray arm holes with a toothpick or a paper clip that has been straightened.
  • Swap out both arms.

Tub:

  • Fill a bowl with 7–10 ounces of white vinegar, then put it on the top rack of a clean dishwasher.
  • With hot water and no detergent, complete the "Auto" cycle.
  • Repeat the "Auto" cycle one more time.

Problem with dishwasher detergent

While detergent is essential for cleaning dishes, inappropriate use or dispenser issues might cause them to become unclean. Examine your detergent consumption:

  • Add the appropriate quantity: When using too much detergent, your GE dishwasher may leave residue on the dishes, while using too little will leave the dishes filthy. For guidance on how much detergent to use for your laundry load, read the instructions on the detergent box.
  • Utilize a premium detergent: For cleaner dishes, try using a detergent that includes a degreaser and pre-treatment. For optimal results, keep detergent in a cold, dry location and use it within three months of purchase.
  • Examine the dispenser: To ensure that detergent is properly dispensed at the appropriate moment, make sure the dispenser is opening completely. If the dispenser is damaged, it has to be replaced.

Issues With Water Supply

If your GE dishwasher still can't thoroughly wash your dishes, your water supply may be to blame. The dishwasher will not wash dishes effectively if there is not enough hot water supply. The water supply to the dishwasher can be checked as follows:

  • Verify the water pressure: The water intake valve on the dishwasher needs 20–120 PSI of pressure to open and close in order to provide water from your home supply. The valve could not open wide enough to let enough water reach the dishwasher if there was not enough pressure. You may need a professional assessment of your home's water pressure if your kitchen sink pressure is also low.
  • Verify the water inlet valve: The dishwasher won't have access to water if there is enough pressure at the valve, yet it still won't open. A qualified dishwasher repair expert must replace a broken water inlet valve.
  • Look over the spray arms: A damaged or obstructed spray arm might cause a GE dishwasher not to spray water. The spray arm must be changed if it has obvious damage or an impenetrable obstruction.
  • Analyze the water's temperature: The dishwasher's water temperature should be at or near 120°F for optimal results. To make hot water more accessible, try running the hot water in the kitchen sink before beginning a wash cycle. Your home's water heater might need to be modified if the water temperature is still too low.
