Electric cars are the answer to the growing effect of global warming and air pollution. Regularly when a car company launches design for their new hatchback or family estate, they tend to be toned down versions of the ones on their sports and supercars. The point to be made is that their design philosophy is the same, make a family estate version of whatever car is best in the company’s eyes. This translates into the technology used today in them, where bits of electronic font differentials and power steering are drawn directly from the company’s flagship car. The new Ford Focus RS, which is a four-door hatchback, has 4-wheel drive and rally racer style steering pulled from their Ford RS WRC rally car. This does not mean that new tech is not being added to the next line of their flagships. Recently McLaren designed an automobile called the 670s, and they gave it something called an independent wheel drive. Essentially, it has a computer that sends the power to each wheel individually, and it has another calculator that calculates the direction of the steering wheel and G force applied on the car to measure how hard of a turn it is taking. The reason is that the car can decide which wheel should have what amount of power at any given moment, and then calculate the trajectory that it should follow and the speed. This all means that while being a sports car, it can rival the fastest of hyper-cars on a race track and for less money.

Automotive technology as marketing tool

The car companies of today are using the features that automotive technology gives them as a marketing advantage. Often, adverts about cars give detailed explanations on how it can perform well without having to refuel many times, or how technologically superior the doors and boot lid are. This is a brief summary of advertisement plans given by car companies today. They target a specific marketplace by providing the car the particular feature that caters to that marketplace. This eventually creates tension and competition between the carmakers, a race that evolves the automotive technology and gives promise for a better future that is achievable through it.
