There are many options for cabinet hardware. Once you make key decisions about function and aesthetics, you can get started on your building project.

You will need drawer runners if your project involves a drawer system. Nearly all drawer glides are made up of two pieces. A drawer profile and an interior cabinet profile. The drawer profile attaches to the drawer and the cabinet profile attaches to the cabinet. Once the two pieces have been connected, either a bearing or roller mechanism will allow the slide to move.

How to Choose Drawer Slides?

The main types of slides that can be mounted are side mount (Undermount), center mount, or center mount. It is an aesthetic choice. A variety of drawer slide manufacturers offer optional features, such as slow motion closing, locking, specialty finishes, and heavy-duty weight ratings.

Mount Type

The location of the drawer slides will affect how hidden or obvious the hardware is when the drawers are open. Ken's shop uses concealed hardware as much as possible. This gives it a polished look. The added benefit of concealed hardware is its higher quality. This makes them both more attractive and provides better performance.

Side mount

The drawer slides that mount to side mounts are sold in pairs. The slide is visible from the side of a drawer when it is opened. These require that clearance be allowed between the drawer slides and cabinet opening.

Under Mount

Pairs of under mount drawer slides can be purchased. They mount to either the side or the underside side of the drawer. They do not show through drawers when they are open. They require less clearance to install than a side mount slide and are also adjustable.

One piece is all that's needed to mount the center of the drawer's underside. They are not visible when the drawer is open. Some require clearance based on the slide's thickness.

The standard length of drawer slides ranges from 10 to 28 inches, with special lengths available for custom drawers. The drawer will not be able to pull out sufficiently far if the slide length is too short. Conversely, a long slide will make it impossible for the drawer to fit in the cabinet.

Extension

The extension is the extension of the drawer after it has been fully opened. Consider how much space you need to reach the drawers' backs and how far they have to extend outward. Here are the top three extensions most often used:

  • Full: Telescopes are designed to extend the reach of the drawer and allow for full access. When you need to reach the back of the drawer.
  • Over travel: Telescopes allow you to extend the drawer beyond its full extent and still have full access. It is ideal for counters having an overhang that requires access to the drawer back.

Motion features

Because they reduce noise and make closing drawers as easy as taps, soft close drawer slides are increasingly popular. Here are some of the most common motion features.

  • Soft-close: By slowly drawing the drawers in, drawers are prevented from slamming.
  • Self Close: This is similar to soft close drawer slides. It draws the drawer in with less effort.
  • Push/touch-to-open/touch-release: Lightly press the drawer door front to unlock the drawer. For modern styles that don't have external cabinet hardware
  • Locking: Lock the drawer into position when closed. Ideal for kitchen appliance stands and child safety.
