Why Proper Disposal of Expired Medications is Important?

The collection of unwanted and expired pharmaceuticals in homes has raised concerns during the last few decades. The majority of individuals don’t know how to properly dispose of unwanted or expired medications.

Our goals were to examine the amount of out-of-date medicine in Arab families in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), identify which therapeutic categories produce more unused pharmaceuticals, and assess drug disposal procedures.

Methods:

The writing of this descriptive study adhered to the STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) standards for cross-sectional studies.

Between November 2020 and January 2021 (n = 503), it was carried out among 503 Arab families in the UAE utilizing an online questionnaire (n = 503).

Participants’ sociodemographic information, the incidence of expired prescriptions in households, and how to dispose of them were all the subjects of the questions.

Key conclusions of the study:

74% of respondents had unopened pharmaceuticals in their homes, and 58% had expired medications. Analgesics (34%) and cosmetics (27%) were the most often unutilized medications, followed by antibiotics (26%).

Also, more than 42% of the drugs that had expired came in solid dosage forms, 28% in semisolid dosage forms, and 24% in liquid dosage forms. Participants opted to dispose of their medicines by throwing them in the garbage (86%).

Conclusions There are a lot of out-of-date pharmaceuticals in Arab families, including analgesics, antibiotics, and cosmetics. Arab households are not aware of how to properly dispose of drugs. As a result, it is suggested that neighborhood pharmacies encourage the return of pharmaceuticals to pharmacies and educate the public on proper pharmaceutical disposal methods.

Expired medication can be dangerous as they may have lost their effectiveness or become contaminated over time. They can also cause adverse side effects or interact negatively with other medications.

Improper disposal of expired medications can also have negative impacts on the environment. Medications can pollute water supplies and endanger aquatic life when they are flushed down the toilet or poured down the drain.

When disposed of in the trash, they can also end up in landfills, potentially contaminating the soil and groundwater.
