With online meetings and working from home increasingly becoming standard operating procedures for many companies, employees are having to learn how to deal with the new way of working. That means learning how to use features of their devices that they may not have had a use for previously. When you're in a meeting or collaborating with colleagues who aren't in the same room as you, you need to use technology to be able to share ideas with others. One way to do that is to record your screen, allowing you to share it with your co-workers. Here are ways to screen record on Mac.

Apple launched the MacOS Mojave in 2018. With this update, Apple also introduced a built-in screen recording for the macOS called Screenshot. It’s a very convenient and easy-to-use app to capture, and record video and audio on your screen. However, the downside is that you can only access this feature if your macOS is Mojave or later.

Nonetheless, if you have an older macOS version, don’t worry as there is still another way to screen record using QuickTime. Here are your options:

Record your screen with Screenshot

If you have macOS Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey, launching Screenshot is easy, Here’s How:

  • Press command + shift + 5 on the keyboard at once. Screenshot toolbar will appear at the bottom of your screen. You have options for capturing a still screen or for recording a video. You’ll see a little circle recording icon on the logo and for the recording purpose.
  • You can choose between “Record Entire Screen” or “Record Selected Portion.” If you choose to record a selected portion of your screen, a box will show up allowing you to drag and resize the recording window. You can click the record button or click anywhere on the screen.
  • Click “Options” to see what other preferences you can choose. You can set a countdown timer, which microphone to use, and decide where to save your recording.
  • Once you’ve selected the options you want, it’s time to record. Click the “Record button.” If you’ve chosen To set the timer, check the timer to see how long until the recording begins. If not, recording will begin immediately.
  • If you don't want to record immediately, click the timer to stop recording. To stop the recording, click on the stop button in the top right corner of the menu bar. You can also hit Command, Control, Escape to stop recording. Or if you have a Touch Bar, you'll see a stop button in the upper left side.
  • Once you stop recording, you'll see a thumbnail of the recording in the lower-right corner of the screen. If you swipe the thumbnail to the right or do nothing, your recording will automatically save as a QuickTime movie (MOV) in the location you've set.

Record the Mac Screen with QuickTime Player

If you are running an older version of macOS, is there any way to screen record on Mac? No worries! QuickTime screen recording is here to help. In general, QuickTime Player is widely known as a video player on Macs, but it’s also a great screen recorder. Below is the process for recording your Mac screen with QuickTime Player

  • Find and launch the QuickTime Player app on your computer.
  • Click File in the menu bar > New Screen Recording or press Control + Command + N on the keyboard.
  • After that, the Screenshot Toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen.
  • Once it stops recording, the player will open the video automatically.
  • Click File again to save your recorded video at your desired location.

Use QuickTime Player to screen record on Mac

Besides, QuickTime Player also offers you basic functions to edit your recorded video. It allows users to trim, rotate or change the video playback speed as they want.

As such, you know how to use built-in apps to record your Mac screen. Although these apps can help to record quickly and conveniently, they don’t give you enough handy video editing tools. For example, you cannot insert text captions to explain what you do. Or, normalizing audio amplitudes is out of reach. To create professional videos, you may need to find and integrate another video editor. That’s time-consuming, indeed.

The best solution is using third-party software that covers both screen recording and video editing features. So, read on to know more.
