A carpeted staircase is a beautiful addition to any home, adding warmth and comfort to your overall space. But being a zone of high foot traffic, they often end up accumulating dirt, dust, grime, and other debris, ultimately appearing extremely unsightly.

Cleaning a carpeted staircase might seem a challenging task, especially if you are not an amateur carpet cleaner. Nevertheless, in this blog, we will explain to you the steps to cleaning your carpeted staircase like a trained expert using a few household ingredients and tools, yielding results that exceed your expectations.

Five Simple Steps To Clean Your Carpeted Staircase

Brush The Staircase

So first, grab a stiff brush or scrub brush and start brushing the staircase, working from the top stair all the way down to the bottom stair. While doing so, pay special attention to corners or edges and areas that are heavily soiled.

Brushing the staircase prior to vacuuming helps loosen dirt, dust, and other grimy particles, making it easier for your vacuum cleaner to suck it all up during the next step.

Vacuum It Thoroughly

Once you've brushed your carpet, take your vacuum cleaner, fix a crevice tool attachment to it, and start vacuuming the edges and corners of the staircase, as this is where much of the contaminants thrive and are hardest to clean with normal brushes.

After covering the edges, swap to floor attachment (ideally with a beater bar) to the vacuum and start vacuuming the surface of each stair, making slow, deliberate passes with the vacuum.  Then, for a more thorough cleaning,  go back up the stairs and vacuum the vertical risers of each step.

Scrub It With Carpet Shampoo

Now, before you apply the shampoo directly, read the instructions carefully. Once done, combine the shampoo with warm water in a bucket.

After that, dip a brush or sponge lightly into the cleaning solution and gently scrub the carpet fibers in a circular motion. While doing so, remember two things in mind.

First, pay extra attention to heavily stained areas and tackle them by dabbing those areas gently, and second, avoid harsh scrubbing at any cost, as this can damage the delicate fibers.

Rinse And Dry Properly

So once you are done with shampooing, fill another bucket with clean water and dip a fresh, new cloth in it. Wring it out properly and start wiping the shampooed areas to remove any residue. (Residue, if left uncleaned, can further attract dirt and dust, ultimately making the stain reappear anytime soon)

After rinsing the area, grab a wet/dry vacuum and start vacuuming the entire staircase to remove excess water. If you don't own a wet/dry vacuum, rent it from a nearby store or use an absorbent towel to dab and soak every step of the staircase properly.

Vacuum Once Again

When you're done with the rising and drying part, wait for some twelve hours before vacuuming the stairs again. This step is critical because it removes any unattended dirt and debris that may have accumulated over the waiting hours, as well as piles up any fibers that may have flattened during the cleaning.
