Winters are approaching soon, and so are the holidays. The season has a different vibe to take. From celebrations to fun outdoor trips and activities, winter has so much in store to give us. However, the decreasing temperature is the reason for frowning on the foreheads due to health concerns. Decreasing temperatures increases the risk of ailments, especially for children. But with a little bit of precaution and planning, we can make the best of winters, and the kids can enjoy the outdoors without the threat of falling ill. As parents, it is natural to be concerned regarding children. There is no scarcity of options in the market, offline or online.

Choosing Kids' Clothes

But the task is to choose the right one for your little ones. The possibilities are countless, from essential closet updates to custom kids' clothes. Here are a few tips to remember while dressing up your kids before heading for outdoor fun.

When its winter, keep it dry

Stay away from water during winter day-outs, as the wet body loses heat way faster than the dry body. Whatever you wear, let it stay dry. It is the first thing to remember when it comes to kids.

Layering is the key

There is a simple science behind this logic. Layers trap heat better, so this is the best technique to keep the younger ones warm; instead of making them wear one thick jacket, break their outfit into 3-4 layers. Also, in this whole process, don't make it boring. Style them well, and design your clothes for fun and staying with them. Discuss their outfits with them, and they will not get annoyed with the layering process.

How to layer:

There must be at least 3 layers, but the numbers can be increased per requirement.

  • The base layer

If you're an outdoor enthusiast, you know that the suitable base layer makes all the difference in your comfort. It would help if you had clothes that would keep you warm and dry but also provide breathability for your activity level changes. The base layer can also be an artificial fabric. It would be quick to dry and will also be lighter on budget as compared to wool.  However, if the first fabric to touch the skin is a cotton vest, it is the best for kids.
  • The middle layer:

As the name suggests, the mid layer is placed between base and the upper layer. It provides insulation. It locks the body heat. It is the most swappable layer.you can always switch this layer as per The weather, occasion and activity. A sweatshirt, a light fabric jacket,a shirt, anything you find good, can work as your middle layer. Here, it should be evident that it is not about the layer that keeps you warm. A mid-layer is an undergarment worn between the base layer and the outer jacket. This middle layer can be added - on with a shirt. Here's the fun part: you can make your shirt or design one for your kids. It's also the layer you will often put on, take off, or swap for something else to suit the weather and the activity.
  • The outer shell

The outermost layer is your child's armour against the cold elements of winter like cold wind, mist, snow or rain. It has to be resistant to water and air. It is the layer which will be visible in the outfit, so, go for brighter colours to warm up your winters visually too.

From snow to sleet to rain to hail, your shell's job is to protect you from the elements. Covers are one of the most critical layers in a layering system, whether wearing a light jacket or a heavy coat, so your shells must be high-quality and provide the proper protection. Covers come in a variety of styles, and each has its pros and cons.

It would be best if you chose them as per the occasion, winter strength, the child's age and the activities they will perform during the outing. Of course, there are various jackets or outer shells to choose from. The standard puffy coat is hot and works great for freezing days when there isn't rain or snow in the forecast, but it is not usually waterproof and can be very bulky and uncomfortable. Apart from this, there are many more options to look for.

The size of the outer layer should also be kept in mind. A shorter length will let the heat escape, but an extra long one will interfere with the kids' movements, which might upset them, so keep an eye on the perfect size too.

  • At last, the terminal parts

The terminal parts, i.e., the hands, feet, and head, are the central doorway for heat to escape from the body. So a good pair of socks is also essential for both handstand feet and warm caps. Also, ensure that your kids' hands, feet, and heads are dry before putting on the covers.

Picking a nice pair of gloves is not a tough nut to crack; go for what you like or what your kid is comfortable in. Also, there is a good space for styling too. You can play with colors and patterns over here. Please get a glove with a waterproof outer layer to add an extra safety layer to keep their little hands dry and warm.

They are now coming to a bit more important part, footwear. Since the topic of discussion here is dressing up kids for outdoor activities during winter, you need to think of two major points: warmth and comfort. The boots should be waterproof, insulated, and easy to put on and take off. Also, invest in good pairs of socks; you have to be clear that cotton socks, which are the best for summer, don't work in winter. They even retain moisture, which is not good. So wool or fleece are good choices to look upon while choosing winter socks for your little champs.

Regarding the headgear, choose layered woolen caps that keep them warm and gentle on their hair.
